Do stamps have an expiration date?

Postage stamps, as a rule, do not have an expiration date. You can use your United States postage stamps at face value until they are canceled via the US postal service. Modern forever stamps from The USPS have no face value and never expire, even if the cost of postage goes up.

Postage stamps can not be reused. It’s actually a federal crime to reuse a stamp. If you forget to add postage the letter or package is  usually sent back to the sender postage due. This is why it’s important to add your address in the upper left corner of the envalop.  However, if you have a stamp on the letter with insufficient postage, it will most likely be sent to the recipient postage due

History Of Stamps

First Postage Stamp

The birth of the modern postage stamp begins on May 6, 1840, when Britain issued its first stamp called the “Penny Black.”. It showed the head of the monarch of the time, Queen Victoria.

In 1837 Sir Rowland Hill, the British Postmaster General, introduced the new Post Office Reforms. The revolutionary ideas were that mail could go anywhere in the British Isles at the same rate – a penny for a half-ounce. The postage stamp is paid by the sender not the person receiving the mail.  The payment was noted with a receipted placed on the outside of the letter, a stamp!

The new system of mail deliver became very popular and the concept of collecting a fee in advance spread quickly.  Soon other countries started using the pre-paid stamp system. The United States Post Office Department printed its first stamps, a 5-cent stamp picturing Benjamin Franklin in 1847.

Actually, did you know that the first US postage stamps featured Benjamin Franklin and George Washington? Both men were important figures during the American Revolution and they earned the honors as the first two men to be featured on the first United States stamps.

There was a time when Stamp Collecting was the most popular hobby in the world. People from all walks of life collect stamps. Today, there are many new and exciting hobbies. However, stamp collecting is still among the most popular. There is no limit to how a new stamp collection can be created. You can Join a stamp club to talk with other collectors and even trade stamps.

There is a lot of information available on online, as well as new stamps which are released regularly. Yet, you need to be careful about the information you find on the Internet. It’s best to deal with reputable stamp dealer who is happy to share their experience and knowledge with budding collectors.

The hobby of collecting stamps is about collecting errors, which are a cause for celebration in the stamp collecting community. The most famous error stamp, the “Inverted Jenny,” was discovered by a collector in Washington, D.C. The blue and red, 24-cent error airmail stamp features the image of an upside-down airplane. As the story goes, during the inaugural flight of the new air-mail service, the plane – which was carrying many of the new air-mail stamps – flipped over and landed upside down. An original, unused “Inverted Jenny” stamp is valued at $400,000.

How Stamps Are Made

The process of creating a postage stamp begins with the paper for stamps. It is delivered to the printing plant with the glue already applied to the back of the stamp paper. There are two printing processes which are most often used in making stamps. One is the intaglio process the other is the offset printing process. Some stamps require both processes.

Intaglio is the oldest method of creating postage stamps. It takes a lot of time, however, the advantage is the stamps have a more distinct image. Today newer, faster, and less expensive methods are more common to create stamps.

Philately is the collecting of stamps. Since 1886, the American Philatelic Society (APS) has supported and encouraged the collection of postage stamps. Currently, the APS (www.stamps.org) says they have over 30,000 people, from 110 countries as members.

The USPS alone is the only authority to issue United States stamps. However, the USPS has several authorized dealers and vendors who can legally make custom stamps. For example stamps.com
