About Cigarettes and Tobacco

What is tobacco?

Tobacco is a plant grown for its leaves to be dried and fermented. Once processed in tobacco products such as cigarettes. Tobacco is addictive because it contains nicotine. This is the reason why so many people who use tobacco find it difficult to stop using tobacco products.

How do people use tobacco?

People smoke, chew, and sniff tobacco. Smoked tobacco products include cigarettes and cigars among other forms. Some people also smoke loose tobacco in a pipe or water pipe know as a hookah. Chewed tobacco products include chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, and snus.

Does Tobacco Affect The Brain?

The nicotine in any tobacco product is readily absorbed into the bloodstream when people uses it. Once entered in to the blood, nicotine immediately stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate.

Tobacco And Your Health

the most of the severe health effects of tobacco use comes from other chemicals, rather than nicotine. Studies show tobacco smoking can lead to lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Tobacco use can increase the risk of heart disease, which can lead to stroke or heart attack.

Pregnant women who smoke cigarettes increase the risk of miscarriage, stillborn or premature infants, or infants with low birth weight. Smoking while pregnant is connected to learning and behavioral problems in some children.

Secondhand smoke, from the burning a tobacco product or exhaled by the person who is smoking, is known to be harmful. Secondhand smoke is also known to be a cause of lung cancer and heart disease. Breathing in smoke from users of tobacco can cause health problems in both adults. Children exposed to secondhand smoke are known to be at an increased risk of ear infections, asthma, lung infections, and possibly death from sudden infant death syndrome.

Quit Smoking

Both behavioral treatments and medications can help people quit tobacco use, however, some studies indicate that the combination of medication with counseling is more effective than either alone.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a national toll-free quitline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, to serve as an access point for anyone seeking information and help in quitting smoking.
